Chelsea senior players training today at Cobham led by captain John Terry |
The first team players of the Chelsea football club resumed training at cobham, the clubs training ground today. Following a horrific season in which Chelsea had put up the worst title defence of the premier league era, the holiday was a much needed relief for the players.
It will be recalled that Chelsea finished in the 10th position in the premier league last season, their worst result for over a decade now. This had led to the sack of their iconic manager and now Manchester united manager in Jose Mourinho. He was replaced by Dutch tactician, Gus Hiddink who could only do little to help the team to a 10th place finish.
Chelsea then hired the then Italy manager, Antonio Conte as the permanent replacement for Mourinho but the Italians start to life at Stamford bridge was delayed by Italy's participation in the Euro 2016, where they lost in the quarter finals to Germany. Following their exit, Conte took a one week rest to recharge his batteries before resuming duty at the SW6.
Today, some of the members of the first team returned to training under the guidance of the Italian who is yet to be officially unveil thus the relative secrecy of his activities for now.
In a statement at the club's official website, some of the First team players of last season were joined by those that were loaned to other clubs in the just concluded season.
The statement went on to outline some of the early pre-season activities of the club:
"Today marks the start of pre-season for a number of our first team players, who are back at Cobham for the first time following their summer break.
"The only players missing were those who reached the knockout stages of the Copa America and Euro 2016.
"Players reported to the training ground shortly before 9am and had their breakfast together, while the rest of the morning was spent undergoing medical screening.
That was followed by lunch, and early this afternoon the players headed out on to the Cobham training pitches for their first session of pre-season."It was an experienced set of players reporting back, with John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, John Mikel Obi, Willian and Diego Costa all involved.
"Younger members of the squad such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who was part of the England Under-21 team which won the Toulon Tournament in May, Kenedy, Bertrand Traore and Baba Rahman are also back in training today.
"The players will be in every day this week before heading to Austria on Friday evening for a week-long training camp. We will play two friendlies on the trip, against Rapid Vienna on Saturday and RZ Pellets next Wednesday.
"The members of the squad who were involved in the knockout rounds of the Copa America and Euros will join up with the rest of the group later in pre-season" www.chelseafc.com
